The Adventuring Company is made up of five friends with a long history of playing games. Occasionally together! Gaming brought us together, and we have an absolute blast with each other. The five of us have been playing together for a few years now and we each have varying degrees of experience with TTRPGs.
We’ve been playing 5e for years now and it’s the one that we’re most familiar with.
We’ll be running through “The Sunless Citadel” adventure by Bruce Cordell which we’re setting in the Forgotten Realms in the area around Neverwinter.
Our heroes will be level one and we’re going back to the basics. Player’s Handbook rules only; optional rules from there have been removed for this campaign. We’ve opted to do this for a couple of reasons.
First, it’s extremely easy to get lost in the noise of needing the newest rulebooks, the latest Unearthed Arcana, and the most recently released products on DM’s Guild. For a new player this can be a lot of STUFF to sift through. By embracing the Player’s Handbook, we want to show that you can have a full enjoyable campaign with just the core rules. You don’t need to “catch up” by buying every book under the sun nor do you need the newest errata.
Second, it simplifies the game a bit more. You don’t need to pour through a bunch of books to create an interesting character. Optional rules like feats don’t necessarily do amazing things for your game, and by simplifying the game to the basics it can give you a better idea of what rules are in place and why they exist so you can break them later. Embracing simplicity means other aspects of the game will go smoother. Once you have a handle on the basic rules it becomes easier to layer on expanded systems that interest you.
After “The Sunless Citadel” we’ll be exploring our options for the next campaign. We’ll be open to old and new systems so weigh in on what you would like to see in our future episodes and maybe your favorite system will be highlighted in one of our upcoming episodes.
Time is valuable. Thank you for spending your time reading this! We hope you’ll listen to our podcast and swing over to our social media and tell us what you liked about it, what you would like to see more of, or just to say hello.
